Re: The Thread For Movies
Maybe I should change the title to include TV shows... but anyways, I started watching Kingdom on Netflix: a Korean historical/zombie miniseries that's really enjoyable. I'm three episodes in and so far, I'd definitely recommend!

I've heard good things about this one, and have been meaning to watch it. My wife and I are currently working our way through Stargate, currently, however....

Cool, I'll be curious what you think once you watch it. I've been enjoying it.
I watched The Monster over the weekend. And by "watched," I mean I watched the first half and then skipped through the rest just so I could get closure and confirm the super cliche ending I foresaw from the first 10 minutes. The practical creature effects were pretty good and it had a fine premise I thought, but oh gosh the writing was really poor... The actresses/actors did the best they could with the script, but it was pretty bad. I would not recommend.
At Walmart they had Jeepers Creepers 1&2 combo on Blu-Ray for $5 so I picked it up. I haven't seen either, but heard the first one at least is pretty enjoyable. Adam, have you seen those?

I've seen all three, actually. I thought they were...alright, forgettable but largely enjoyable B-horror.

Cool. I figure for $2.50/movie, it's less than the cost of a rental so why not. I have a soft-spot for B-horror too. I'll be sure to post my thoughts once I watch 'em.

Kerrick wrote:I watched two movies this weekend: The Void and Train To Busan.
The Void. I had seen people recommend it for fans of The Thing so I was intrigued. The special effects are all practical with minimal CGI and some cool creature designs. But that's about where the similarities ended. It started out very well with a good premise, location, characters, etc. Though like so many horror flicks, it sorta fell apart towards the end IMO. Overall I'm not sure I'd recommend it.
Train To Busan. This movie was really good and I definitely recommend. It's got likable and interesting characters, is well written, has some great action sequences, and is overall just a very well done film. As most Americans do, I guess I would've preferred a slightly more upbeat ending. This is no Zombieland where everyone lives in the end...
It must be a small world, because I actually just watched The Void yesterday. Overall it was a fairly convoluted movie that lacked very much in its plot and premise, as you point out. I think if they had actually stressed the more Lovecraftian vibe that it had towards the end, with travel to other dimensions, perhaps it would have been better. But as it was it was confusing. The Thing is a better movie by a million miles, haha. Don't waste your time.

^Yup, it's hard to beat The Thing, even after all these years.
(I just noticed that the quotes say "a écrit" instead of "wrote" - that's weird. Has it always been that way? When I have more time I'll dig into the settings to see if French is selected instead of English.)

Yeah, it doesn't say that on mine, it's just English. You must have something changed in the settings.
On another note, if you've never read the novella that The Thing was based on, it's a masterpiece.
"Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr.

I have not read that; thanks for the link! I look forward to reading it. I saw the old black and white movie years and years ago, but don't remember it at all. I wouldn't mind rewatching that as well.
That's weird, it's in English now for me too. Huh.

There's a lot of science in the novella, some of which is considered to be THEORY, but the way I look at it, it is science-FICTION after all. Anyway, a lot of the premises are interesting.

Any Amazon Prime subscribers should check out Annihilation on the Amazon app on your Roku/Firestick/etc (free with Prime)...
pretty good sci-fi thriller! I enjoyed it a lot. Lots of nice visual shots/scenery. I actually bought it on Blu-Ray but I see that it is free on Prime now.

Ah that movie has been on my watch-list long before it ever was released but I still haven't watched it!

I got it on Blu-ray shortly after the release. Science-fiction is by far my favorite genre of movies, literature, etc.
What I'm really looking forward to is the upcoming Dune movie. I'm expecting great things from it.

I saw Alita, Battle Angel last week in 3D. If anyone is on the fence about seeing it, I would say go and see it if you like action movies or scifi. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot. It had a Ghost in the Shell vibe, if you liked that movie. There was a lot of action and the visual effects were great, even if the plot was a bit lacking. I won't say any more because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

Re: The Thread For Movies
If anyone likes prison escape movies, I just recently watched the movie Papillon (on Amazon Prime). It was based on a true story and it's the best prison escape movie I've seen in a long time (it also seemed very realistic).
There's an old version of the movie from the 70s, which I guess means this is essentially a remake, but I haven't seen that one yet.
The movie contains language, blood/violence, and some nudity/crudeness, so just be forewarned.

^I haven't seen the remake, but the original is very good. I saw it years ago though so I don't remember a whole ton.
I watched Jeepers Creepers last night. It was pretty decent though nothing to write home about. I thought the creature/lore was pretty cool and original, it had a good setting, and the characters were likable enough too.

The visuals were fantastic, but I was actually kind of disappointed with this one.
Of course, it doesn't help that I've read the book it's based on, and thought the book was disappointing, too. Amusingly, although the movie altered some things from the book pretty significantly, they both ended up being about equally boring IMO. And it's a shame, because the premise is super cool, and I really wanted to like them.

What did you think about the ending, Adam? I agree that a lot of the concepts were lackluster and the plot could be better developed, but I really liked the ending. I thought that helped to make up for it. P.S. I haven't read the book it's based on, so I can't draw a comparison.

I...uh...don't remember the ending.

Sorry if someone already recommended (I didn't read this whole thread), but if you like Annihilation and sci-fi drama/thrillers with gorgeous visuals (and a breathtaking score to boot), I highly recommend Sunshine!

Sunshine is a good'un, despite some disregard for physics and such haha. It's written by the guy who directed Annihilation.
On the topic of movies written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle... I highly recommend 28 Days Later.

Agreed! Unfortunately 28 Weeks Later was not very good... It's amazing how much of a difference a good director can make. I thought the opening scene of Weeks was fantastic and then the rest of the movie not so much. I found out later that Boyle had directed that portion and then another guy the rest. Also,
- Spoiler:
- how could they waste the awesome acting talents of Robert Carlyle by making him a zombie for the majority of the movie?!?

LOL I know right!!! Meh, 28 Weeks was such a disappointment.
I haven't seen some of Boyle's more recent stuff... I really want to watch 127 Hours...
was Steve Jobs good?
