Re: The Thread For Movies
Supposedly there is (or was?) a third part in the series (28 Months Later, presumably...) though I haven't heard anything about it for a while.
I haven't bothered with Boyle's recent stuff either. After the oscar bait Slumdog Millionaire, I haven't bothered. His older stuff is quite good though. I thought The Beach was very good, Millions underrated and enjoyable, and Shallow Grave well done too. A Life Less Ordinary is a fun one as well.

Yeah idk man, I mean, I won't lie I was a little entertained by Slumdog but I see what you mean in that it was quite pretentious.
The Beach was definitely good, as well as Shallow Grave. Haven't seen Millions or A Life Less Ordinary either. Wonder if they are on streaming somewhere... I'll have to check into that.

Re: The Thread For Movies
Slumdog wasn't a bad movie in itself, but very obviously trying really hard to win the best picture award. I generally don't care much for that type of movie.
Millions never got much recognition though it's a pretty creative and well done flick. Some of the theology I don't agree with... but otherwise it's an enjoyable movie. (The main character talks to different Catholic saints and at one point, one explains what "really" happened when Jesus fed the 5,000.)
A Life Less Ordinary is pretty zany and while it certainly won't win any awards, it's fun and I remember liking it.

Pilgrim's Progress animated film coming this year!! I must say, I'm rather excited about this. It was one of my favorite 'extra-Biblical' books when I was young.

Re: The Thread For Movies
Very cool!
This weekend my dad and I went to see They Shall Not Grow Old at the $3 theater. It was very good, though not for the faint of heart. It's a WWI documentary directed by Peter Jackson that utilized modern technology to color and improve the quality of the original footage taken 100 years ago. They did an amazing job with the footage, but it was also very well directed. Unlike most war documentaries, there was no "narrator" explaining the history or technology or whatnot. Instead, the narrations came from numerous veterans describing what they were thinking, feeling, etc. It made for a much more personal, emotional experience. I highly recommend, though with the warning that there is some pretty gruesome footage of real people wounded, maimed, and killed.

I watched Apocalypse Now this weekend, and wow, what an experience. I understand now why that movie is so well thought of.

Nice! That one's a classic for good reason. The ending is so climatic and epic. Which version did you watch? I know the extended director's cut isn't the "preferred" version by most fans. I've seen both versions but it's been a loooong time so I don't remember the differences other than the massive run time.

I watched the original, 2.5 hour cut. From what I read, it looks like that's the preferred version, at least for first viewing, so maybe after some time passes I'll hunt down the Redux and watch that.
There's one shot from the movie, when they're on the boat on the river, and they pass under a crashed fighter plane...that's one of the coolest shots I think I've ever seen.

Cool. I bought the redux version on DVD back in the day and watched that version once I think. As I recall, it just made the movie a lot longer without really improving it any.

Re: The Thread For Movies
Not a movie and VERY R-rated I know but... I'm re-watching all the Game of Thrones episodes to prepare for the final season...
I read the books way before the show existed and I've been very impressed with the attention to detail and the production quality and how they have stayed as close to the books as possible (at least in the beginning).
Should be an epic ending to an epic series this April 14th.

In Bruges is a very funny dark comedy. The title was, I thought at first, kinda dumb...but after watching the movie I understood it better. Recommended.

^In Bruges is great. I also really enjoyed Seven Psychopaths. But the director's third movie I thought was pretty atrocious, mainly because of how they glorified suicide and negatively portrayed Christians. (I don't even remember its name, Three Billboards something something.)

I watched The Captive last night with my family. It was pretty mediocre. My wife hit the nail on the head when she stated that it seemed like a feature-length episode of CSI haha. The acting was good and it had some suspenseful moments, though the script and plot were a little weak IMO. Not a terrible movie, but not great either.

I'm trying to catch up on some of the classic crime movies. Lately I've seen LA Confidential (which was pretty good) and Goodfellas (which was alright...I understand the praise of it but it was a bit meh for me). I'd also like to finally get around to seeing The Godfather movies.

Re: The Thread For Movies
Oh man, you haven't seen The Godfather flicks? Admittedly, it's been a loooong time since I've seen 'em. I liked the first the most, though I think most people consider the second to be the best. The third is a bit of a letdown FYI so keep your expectations low on that one.
LA Confidential was pretty good though not one I've ever felt the need to re-watch since I saw it in high school. Funny story: my dad and I rented Goodfellas and were surprised that it started so abruptly and without any title, credits, etc. By the time we realized we had put the double-sided DVD upside-down and started the movie in the second-half, we just stuck with it haha. So I've never seen the first half of that one. A good underrated mobster flick is Miller's Crossing (by the Coen Brothers).
Adam, have you watched Dragged Across Concrete yet? I remember you being a fan of the director's previous stuff. I looked on the IMDB parents' guide and it looks like a very heavy-R rating so I'm not sure if I want to see it... but I've heard it's quite good.

Has Ravenous been mentioned? I didn't see it in the thread, but I could have sworn it got brought up in here....

The Guy Pearce / Robert Carlyle cannibal flick? That one's great! I definitely own it on DVD haha. Though I saw something about a new movie/show with the same name and know nothing about it.

Yeah, that one. Definitely my second favorite horror-western-comedy about cannibalism.

Oh, Bone Tomahawk of course. Although Ravenous is probably the more overtly comedic of the two and Bone Tomahawk isn't really a "comedy" in a normal sense, I find the dialogue of that movie laugh out loud hilarious.

Aha, yeah I wouldn't consider BT a comedy, though it definitely did have some comedic moments.
I remember hearing YEARS ago that the director of Ravenous was supposed to do a movie with Carlyle in it about stealing corpses or something but nothing ever came to be.

Re: The Thread For Movies
I'm not a big fan of superhero movies, but I really enjoy Scream! I like all four Scream movies quite a bit. I started watching the TV show but it's unfortunately really not that great... It's more of a teenie-bopper soap-opera than slasher horror/comedy.
