The Void. I had seen people recommend it for fans of The Thing so I was intrigued. The special effects are all practical with minimal CGI and some cool creature designs. But that's about where the similarities ended. It started out very well with a good premise, location, characters, etc. Though like so many horror flicks, it sorta fell apart towards the end IMO. Overall I'm not sure I'd recommend it.
Train To Busan. This movie was really good and I definitely recommend. It's got likable and interesting characters, is well written, has some great action sequences, and is overall just a very well done film. As most Americans do, I guess I would've preferred a slightly more upbeat ending. This is no Zombieland where everyone lives in the end...
I've seen both of these. The Void is mostly worthwhile for its practical effects, and Train to Busan is a good take on a zombie flick.

Re: The Thread For Movies
There's a movie that I believe is exclusive to Shudder (horror streaming service, only about $5 a month) called Terrified. Don't let the B-movie schlock of the cover fool you: it is an incredibly effective horror movie. I've seen some complain that there isn't much to the plot (which is true), but honestly the movie is so dang creepy that this doesn't bother me at all.

I've added it to my watchlist! Thanks for the recommendation.

Kerrick, I looked at The Proposition and realized that I had actually seen it before, only didn't remember it well. Maybe it's one of those like No Country where I need some time and to watch it again to "get" it.

Mandy was a weird one...definitely style over substance, but when it was stylish hoo boy it really went for it. Honestly the first half of the movie just about put me to sleep, but the second half made up for it, and Nic Cage delivered.

Yeah, I totally agree. The first half was really slow and somewhat confusing, but the second half was great. Honestly, it was almost like watching two different movies. Cage had a good performance in this one as well, like you said.

Oh haha it left quite the impression then! Yeah I recommend giving it another shot; I think it's a really amazing film.

Re: The Thread For Movies
This Christmas I watched Perinbaba (English: The Snow Fairy) with my family. It's a Czechoslovak classic that my wife watched with her family every Christmas as a kid. It's a fantastic and very creative movie with some of the best set designs and visuals you'll see. It's a lot of fun and quite heart-warming too. I highly recommend! It's about a young boy who's saved by the Snow Fairy from her sister Death so he can live forever and help her make snow for the world. But he sees a young girl who he falls in love with so he goes back to Earth to be with her. But of course she's got an evil step-mother, etc. It's great fun.
The entire movie is posted on youtube but without subtitles. So you've gotta download the youtube video and download the subtitles (which are available online too) which is a bit of a hassle but totally worth it. The trailer doesn't really do it justice... but even just watch the opening scene (what they're saying isn't important in it) to get an idea:

I am really looking forward to seeing Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I love what Legendary Pictures did with the 2014 film, and I can't wait to see the all out kaiju brawl that King of the Monsters is going to be.

I watched Hold The Dark recently and do NOT recommend. It was very dark, bleak, twisted, violent, and rather pointless - with mostly unlikable characters mumbling pseudo-philosophical nonsense and whose motives made little sense.

I watched Bad Times At The El Royale this weekend. I quite liked it. Adam, I assume you've seen it?

I actually haven't. Honestly after seeing the trailer, I wasn't sure if it looked interesting or not.

For anyone who has Amazon Prime, I'd like to recommend JourneyQuest. It's a webshow that's split into seasons, each season being between 45 minutes and 2 hours long, three seasons so far. It's a spoof on fantasy RPG's. Very low-budget, but also very self-aware in its humor. Hilarious stuff.

Oh I'm surprised. I enjoyed it and think it's definitely worth giving a shot. Did you like Cabin In The Woods? It's written/directed by the same guy so it's got a somewhat similar feel and style, though it's not as comedic.

I did like Cabin in the Woods, and was not aware of that, so I will check it out. Thanks!

Have any of you guys seen Hereditary yet?
So there have been a few horror movies in the past few years that have been widely hailed as modern classics, basically: The Witch, It Follows, and Hereditary come to mind. I thought It Follows was just alright, The Witch frankly boring, but Hereditary...Hereditary lived up to the hype for me. Very effective I thought, and mostly because when it goes for a scare, it goes for emotional impact.

I have not, though thought it looked pretty good. It's hovered on/off my watchlist because it looks maybe a bit too dark/disturbing/gruesome for my tastes these days.

I genuinely have a hard time telling what's "too dark" for some people, so I won't try to comment on that, but...it's pretty dark. A lot of its effectiveness comes from the emotional investment, if that says anything.

Re: The Thread For Movies
Gotcha. Well, "too dark" is indeed mighty ambiguous - and I'll admit, my own criteria is not too consistent anyways. The last couple of horror flicks I watched were just dark, bleak, and left me feeling kinda icky afterwards. I'm trying to avoid movies like that, though I'm always on the lookout for another The Thing, Scream, The Fly, etc.

Re: The Thread For Movies
Speaking of bleak, Green Room is very good, although very dark. It's about a punk band that do a show at a bar, accidentally witness a crime, and come under attack. What's most interesting is Patrick Stewart's role in the movie, which is absolutely chilling. You've never seen him in a role like this.
On a different note, we watched one of the original Pink Panther movies the other day (A Shot in the Dark), the ones with Peter Sellers. Hilarious stuff. There's one scene toward the end, where the Inspector gets frustrated and, for just a second, Sellers looks right at the camera with this utter, wide-eyed frustration...absolutely gold.

Re: The Thread For Movies
Oh yeah, I saw Green Room. It was very well done but yeah, really intense and quite dark. I thought Stewart's role was the weakest part of the movie actually. I dunno, the writing/character just didn't give him much of any opportunity to shine. I thought the other characters did great though, especially a couple of the band members and the one nazi guy wanting to get his red shoelaces.
Ah the Pink Panther movies are classic! I loved watching those as a kid and would like to rewatch them again soon.
