Most of us here seem to like collecting obscure Christian heavy metal music, but does anyone have other fun collections?  Baseball or Pokemon cards, books, shrunken heads, stamps...?

Whenever I'd go over to one of my friends' house from highschool, I'd ogle at his mom's Russian lacquer box collection.  It's a beautiful style of art of painted jewelry boxes (usually up to about six inches long or so) with hand-painted depictions of Russian folk stories in exquisite detail - often painted with a single strand of hair.  The bold colors, fantastic/folk imagery, and ultra-fine detail just captivated me.  Anyways, fast-forward to about a year ago when my parents were cleaning out their house of stuff they had inherited from my great-grandmother and lo and behold was one such box!  I was thrilled.  A few months later at a flea-market I found a smaller, round one for only $3 and thus began my collection.  The nice ones are ultra-expensive so I may never add any others, but I have a collection of two boxes now.  Smile  Here are a couple pictures I took of them:

What fun things do y'all like to collect?

I've always been a collector.

Some things I used to collect:

1. Stamps (when I was a kid)
2. Star Wars TCG card game
3. Fishing gear (when I used to fish a lot)
4. Shells and shark's teeth (when I was a kid)
5. Minor rock and coin collections (when I was a kid)

Things I currently collect:

1. Magic the Gathering trading card game
2. Books

I'm not really into rare books; I just collect for readability.  My rarest are probably a set of The Phantom Menace novels (all different cover arts) signed by the author.

Anyone else here collect MTG cards?  It's by far my most expensive and time-consuming hobby.  I usually play modern tournaments most weeks at my local gaming store.

In other words, if you didn't know it already, I'm a huge nerd.

Very cool! I used to collect rocks as a kid too. I think I still have my humble little collections somewhere...

I'm interested in the shells and shark's teeth. I always wanted to find a shark's tooth but never did. I found a dead baby great-white on the beach once and considered doing some dental work on it to extract a tooth but there were a couple of little kids and their dad nearby so I didn't haha. Where did you find them?

It depends on the beach. I used to find them every once in a while as a kid.  My sister lives in Sarasota and a lot of the beaches near there you can just find them in the sand near the water or use special scoops to sift shells from the water.  Venice Beach is probably the best. They are actually called the "Shark's Tooth Capital of the World."  Whenever I go visit her and we go to the beach, there are always a lot of European tourists that have come to look for shells and shark's teeth.

Right on! That's really neat. If I'm ever down that way, I'll have to fight the European tourists for a shark's tooth! pirat

I found another little Russian box in a thrift store the other day for cheap so I got it.  It's missing a foot on bottom and the picture on it is not painted but just a print so it's not as nice/special as my other two, but it still looks neat!

So I have another random collection: Royal Doulton face pitchers.  What a Face  My parents had these forever but when they moved, my mom was going to get rid of them!  I've always loved them so I gladly took them off her hands and now they watch over our kitchen from up high haha.

Thanks! I realize they're kinda tacky and maybe belong in an English-style pub/bar more than a home... but I think they're just great. My poor wife is a good sport in allowing them hahahahaha. Getting gargoyles for the rain gutters is where she draws the line but I'm hoping one of these days she'll cave... Razz What a Face

How long have you been collecting Marvel comics? With the rise in popularity of them, some of those could be worth quite a bit! Do you collect any and all or only specific series?

Right on! No, I don't collect any comics. I don't have much of any other collections than the ones I've mentioned - and of course, music. Smile

Another thrift-shop score!  These "Russian" ceramic boxes were made in Germany, but they look close enough to fit in my collection and they were very cheap so I couldn't pass 'em up.  Smile

Darnit! We have a local eBay-type business where you bid online for goods but pick up the items yourself - which is totally rad. Anyways, they had a Royal Doulton face mug that'd fit perfectly with the ones I posted above but we got outbid. Sad

Yesterday I found another really neat little Russian box for cheap.  I've never seen one that has two compartments like this has.  Pretty cool!

Adding to my Russian lacquer painted collection... I picked this up on an online local auction. I'm pretty stoked for this one.
