New Sonata Arctica!
Ydi, where you at?
Sonata Arctica wrote:Sonata Arctica announce new studio album "Talviyö", out September 6th and release new single and lyric video "A Little Less Understanding" today
On September 6th, Finnish melodic metal titans SONATA ARCTICA will release their tenth studio album, called »Talviyö« (which means »Winter Night«), including eleven new tracks.
"We were talking about having an album cover made from a photo and luckily managed to find this award winning photographer Onni Wiljami who actually hails from a village not too far from our hometown and his pictures were just perfect for this album", explains keyboardist Henrik "Henkka" Klingenberg.
"The idea was to create an album that is musically in line with at least the previous two albums", says vocalist Tony Kakko and adds: "I am very happy with the songs and the general mood of the album. Some career highlights there, I feel."
"We recorded a bunch of kick a** songs and tried some new stuff as well. I'm really proud of how we managed to record the band sounding more live, playing together instead of just tracking everything one by one", states Henrik "Henkka" Klingenberg.
Today, SONATA ARCTICA release their first single called 'A Little Less Understanding', along with a lyric video.

"The song is lyrically somewhat a follow up for ”I Have A Right” and talks about the difficulty of making the right choices with the upbringing of a new human being", explains Tony Kakko.

»Talviyö« was recorded between September 2018 and May 2019, produced by Mikko Tegelman and SONATA ARCTICA in 'Studio57'. Additional recordings took place in various other places. "Mikko produced the album and he really managed to push us to do our best, even with the more experimental stuff. Working with an outside producer was the biggest new thing we tried this time", says Henrik "Henkka" Klingenberg.
The mixing was done by Mikko Tegelman and Pasi Kauppinen and the mastering was handled by Svante Forsbäck for 'Chartmakers'.

Re: New Sonata Arctica!
They released a new single for another song from the new album. It's very simple and poppy, but it's a pretty nice song IMO.

Don't be a stranger! You should tell that Derek fella to say hi too!
If I were you, I'd get it asap. Early October is like a whole month after its release!

Re: New Sonata Arctica!
I ordered from Nuclear Blast. It was cheaper and while a signed copy would've been cool, it'd be hard for me to justify the $$$ difference with shipping and all.

Yeah, I checked it out and decided against ordering straight from them. Can't spend that much on that at this time. Will get it from the US.

Cool. I just got notification that my copy shipped! So yours should be on its way soon too. (And coincidentally I Have A Right is playing right now haha.)

Re: New Sonata Arctica!
Nice! My copy came in late yesterday and I'm listening to it for the first time now. So far (four songs in), I'm really digging it. It's extremely melodic and is most comparable to The Ninth Hour in terms of feel/style IMO, though perhaps a bit more moody and atmospheric, I dunno.

Okay, got it last night and started listening in the car this AM, so far I'm really liking it! Not done listening though. Also, wish it was longer....

Re: New Sonata Arctica!
Enjoy! I'll be curious to hear your thoughts once you get a chance to let it sink in for a bit. I've listened to it through a few times now and I really enjoy it though at this point I don't know if I like it more than the past couple of albums or not.

Re: New Sonata Arctica!
Okay, I feel just like you about this. I like it, but in comparison to the last two I'm not sure where I stand with it. In some ways, this one seems to flow more nicely together but regaridng the "hook" factor I'm totally undecided. It is different...

Re: New Sonata Arctica!
I haven't had the chance to give my full attention to the album on good speakers... but after a few more listens, it's actually not really growing on me. It's lacking the energy and oomf that their last albums have had and just feels a little generic or less inspired to my ears. I still need to let it sink in more though before I can give a more absolute opinion.
